The Right of Public Access not only gives you the right to be in nature, Land transportation – you are not allowed to pass through property or land that might become damaged. Even owners of property without fences deserve peace and quiet; do not go nearer than 60-70 meters. Do not forget to close gates and stiles behind you. You may not use private jetties or landings.
• Camping – it is allowed to set up a tent for up to 24 hours in an appropriate location not in the vicinity of a residential house. If a larger group plan to set up camp they need permission from the land owner. Leave the place looking as if you had not been there. You may not set up camp on beaches or similar public places. • Lighting fire- the law is rigorous when it comes to lighting fires. You are only allowed to light a fire if there is no risk of causing a forest fire or other damage. Never light a fire during a draught or in windy weather conditions. You can phone 054-15 50 15 (answering service) to get up-to-date information on possible fire hazards. Be sure to put out your fire thoroughly! A limited amount of firewood may be collected in the forest near the fire place. • Swimming and the mooring of boats and canoes is allowed unless the property is private or if there are special ordinances, such as concerning bird sanctuaries. • Canoeing on other people’s waterways is almost always permitted. Leave no remains in the form of litter, campfires or shelters. Take all trash with you, and dig holes to cover faeces and toilet paper. • You may pick wild berries, mushrooms, fallen-down branches and twigs, as well as flowers that are not endangered. However, you may NOT take branches, twigs, bark, leaves, nuts or resin from living trees or bushes.
