Route Finnmarken GENERAL ORIENTATION: the source of Jösse River is the southeast corner of Lake Varaldssjöen situated in the Finnmarken (“Finn forest”) of west Värmland. The area is full of remnants of Finnish culture. At Mitanderfors the river makes a turn into Norway but returs to Sweden at Håvilsrud. It continues past Gunnarskog, and eventually empties into Lake Glafsfjorden at Jössefors. The furher south the more settlements there are along the river. Towards the end of the rout one encounters the two largest lakes. Food can be bought along the rout. The tour can be terminated at Gunnarskog or Jössefors. The route is suitable for canoeing during the whole summer, and can be combined with Köla River and Glaskogen. Jösse River is suitable for a one or two week tour, and is classified as being of medium difficulty. LENGTH: 100 km DIFFERENCE IN ALTITUDE: 215 m TRANSFER: ROUTE: Mitanderfors-Austmarka-Gunnarskog-Arvika–Värmeln– Sandvikengården. MAPS: 12C SV, 11C NV,11C SV, 11C SO ( 50.000th part) or Arvika open-air map (1:100.000) DIFFICULTY: of medium difficulty, mainly through lakes and rivers. LAND TRANSPORTATION: 14 times (between 100 and 6.500 meters), but the longest between Glafsfjorden and Värmeln (6.500 m) can be excluded. PROVISIONS: at Edane, Austmarka, Gunnarskog (small petrol station), Ottebol (Sulvik), and Arvika WATER: We recommend that water is brought in containers, but all cooking can be done using boiled lake water. If possible, avoid using lake water in the vicinity of the population centres you pass. FISHING: Fishing permits can be bought at Sandvikengården. Permit C costs SEK100 per week and canoe. Not valid in Noway or Glafsfjorden! PROBLEMS: Bad weather is only one of the reasons one may need to end the trip at a different place than first planned. You can always contact Sandvikengården if you need to be picked up along the rout, but if possible contact us at least 24 hours before the anticipated pick-up time. |
